Deflation of 0.55 percent occurred in August 2025

In August 2025, NTT Province experienced deflation of 0.55 percent on a monthly basis (m-to-m). The m-to-m deflation in August 2025 was caused by a decline in 4 of the 11 expenditure groups monitored by BPS. The dominant causes of m-to-m deflation in July 2025 were the decline in the price index in the Food, beverages and tobacco group by 1.16 percent with a contribution of -0.43 percent and the Transportation group by 0.87 percent with a contribution of -0.12 percent. Conversely, the inhibitors of m-to-m deflation in August 2025 (which experienced inflation) were the health group with inflation of 0.93 percent and a contribution of 0.01 percent, followed by the household equipment, appliances, and routine maintenance group with inflation of 0.17 percent and a contribution of 0.01 percent.

In addition, the NTT Provincial BPS also noted that in August 2025, calendar year inflation (year to date) was 1.45 percent. Calendar year inflation shows the accumulated inflation during 2025. Meanwhile, the annual inflation rate (year-on-year) in August 2025 was 2.71 percent, lower than the July 2025 y-on-y inflation rate of 3.01 percent. The y-o-y inflation rate in NTT Province in August 2025 was still within the government's target range of 2.5 percent (± 1 percent).

Based on the CPI coverage area in NTT Province, month-to-month deflation occurred in Waingapu at 1.28 percent, South Central Timor Regency at 0.98 percent, and Kupang City at 0.59 percent. Meanwhile, month-to-month inflation occurred in Maumere at 0.48 percent and Ngada Regency at 0.46 percent.

On a year-on-year basis, the highest y-o-y inflation was in Maumere at 4.82 percent, followed by Ngada Regency at 4.11 percent, South Central Timor Regency at 4.05 percent, Kupang City at 1.79 percent, and Waingapu at 1.51 percent. Three regions experienced y-o-y inflation outside the target. This y-o-y inflation is closely related to last year's conditions, where commodity prices tended to be cheaper than current conditions.

In August 2025, the commodities that contributed the most to m-t-m deflation were cayenne pepper at 0.32 percent; air transportation at 0.16 percent; tomatoes at 0.09 percent; kale at 0.05 percent; and green mustard at 0.04 percent. These horticultural commodities, which drove deflation, entered their harvest season in August, causing prices to be lower than in the previous month. Air transportation tariffs also drove deflation as prices returned to normal after an increase in July due to high demand during the school holidays.

The August 2025 NTP is the highest in 2025

The Farmer Exchange Rate (NTP) is an index that describes the rate of growth in selling and purchasing prices related to farmers and is not a measure of farmer welfare. The indices used in the NTP are the Receipt Index (RI), which is an indicator of agricultural production income, and the Payment Index (PI), which describes farmers' needs for household consumption and agricultural production costs, as well as capital goods additions.

The NTP in August 2025 was 101.93, an increase of 2.88 percent compared to the NTP in July 2025. This was driven by an increase in the NTP for the Food Crops sub-sector, which rose by 5.31 percent to 102.42 in August 2025. The NTP for the Capture Fisheries sub-sector also increased by 1.22 percent to 92.84. Other sub-sectors experienced a decline in August 2025.

The Agricultural Business Exchange Rate (excluding household consumption/IKRT) rose 2.89 percent month-on-month, with increases occurring in the Food Crops sub-sector (5.31 percent) and the Capture Fisheries sub-sector (1.29 percent). The NTUP itself is better able to describe the overall condition of agriculture because it compares the IT (receipt index) with Production Costs and Capital Goods Additions (BPPM), which are components of the IB (payment index).

The Household Consumption Index (IKRT) for farmers in rural areas in August 2025 was 0.18 percent m-to-m and 1.83 percent y-o-y. Commodities that contributed significantly to the increase in the August 2025 IKRT included rice, shallots, gold jewelry, cattle, and machine-rolled cigarettes (SPM).

NTT Province's Foreign Trade Balance Returns to Surplus

East Nusa Tenggara's (NTT) foreign trade performance from January to July 2025 recorded positive results with a trade balance that remained in surplus. The dominance of non-oil and gas exports, particularly from the manufacturing and agricultural sectors, demonstrates the competitive potential of NTT's local products in the international market.

Cumulatively, the value of NTT exports from January to July 2025 was recorded at US$ 42.10 million, an increase of 0.11 percent compared to the same period last year. NTT's exports are still dominated by the manufacturing sector, which contributed 79.35 percent. Meanwhile, the value of imports in the same period reached US$ 5.98 million, down 77.70 percent compared to January–July 2024. Thus, NTT posted a trade surplus of US$ 36.12 million.

In July 2025, NTT's export value reached US$ 6.26 million, up 7.04 percent compared to July 2024. Oil and gas exports increased by 18.59 percent, while non-oil and gas exports rose by 6.72 percent (year-on-year). In terms of non-oil and gas, the manufacturing industry contributed the most with a value of US$ 5.08 million, followed by the agricultural sector which contributed 14.46 percent or US$ 0.88 million, and the mining sector which contributed 1.90 percent. Meanwhile, NTT's imports in July 2025 were recorded at US$ 1.90 million, much higher than July 2024, which was only US$ 0.19 million, an increase of 891.29 percent. Despite the surge in imports in July, NTT still experienced a cumulative foreign trade surplus of US$ 4.36 million, with a surplus of US$ 0.18 million in the oil and gas sector and US$ 4.18 million in the non-oil and gas sector.

Cumulatively from January to July 2025, the composition of NTT's exports shows that 97.16 percent came from the non-oil and gas sector, namely manufacturing at 79.35 percent, agriculture at 15.53 percent, and mining at 2.27 percent. Meanwhile, oil and gas exports only contributed 2.84 percent. The main destination for NTT exports from January to July 2025 was Timor Leste with a value of US$ 33.89 million. In addition, NTT exports were also sent to India (US$ 1.65 million), Japan (US$ 1.43 million), and a number of other countries amounting to US$ 5.13 million. The largest export commodities were still dominated by furniture and home lighting.

The occupancy rate of star-rated hotels in NTT Province in July 2025 reached 50.95 percent.

Tourism activity in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) in July 2025 showed promising growth. The number of foreign tourist visits to NTT reached 25,155, an increase of 21.43 percent compared to June 2025 and a surge of 109.71 percent compared to July 2024. Most foreign tourists entered through land borders, accounting for 83.61 percent, mainly from the Motaain, Motamasin, Wini, and Napan border crossing points. Meanwhile, visits through air ports accounted for 15.10 percent, and through sea ports accounted for 1.29 percent. The largest number of foreign tourists entering NTT came from Timor Leste, Malaysia, and Indonesian citizens residing abroad for more than a year.

The movement of domestic tourists (Wisnus) also showed an increase. There were 1,002,652 trips made by domestic tourists from NTT, an increase of 8.72 percent compared to June 2025 and an increase of 41.89 percent compared to July 2024. Meanwhile, the number of Wisnus trips to NTT reached 981,528 trips, an increase of 8.34 percent compared to the previous month and an increase of 45.08 percent compared to July 2024. Most of the trips were made by tourists from within the province itself, contributing 91.95 percent of the total trips in NTT. This increase in travel was influenced by the school holiday season and the holding of festival and sports events in the border region.

In terms of accommodation, the Room Occupancy Rate (ROR) of star-rated hotels in NTT in July 2025 reached 50.95 percent, up 21.35 percent compared to June 2025, and increased by 1.77 percent compared to July 2024. The highest OR was recorded in West Manggarai Regency (73.53 percent), East Sumba (55.40 percent), and West Sumba (46.24 percent). The number of guests at star-rated hotels reached 65,002, dominated by domestic guests at 63.13 percent, with an average length of stay of 1.64 nights.

For non-star hotels, the TPK in July 2025 was recorded at 18.17 percent, an increase of 10.65 percent compared to June 2025, but a decrease of 10.47 percent compared to July 2024. The highest TPK was recorded in Kupang Regency (36.67 percent), Belu (35.31 percent), and South Central Timor (30.53 percent). The number of non-star hotel guests reached 53,488, of which 61.00 percent were domestic guests. The average length of stay for non-star hotel guests was 1.46 nights, with foreign guests averaging 1.63 nights and domestic guests averaging 1.35 nights.

Population mobility in NTT increased in July 2025

Population mobility in East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT) in July 2025 increased, both by air and sea transportation. This increase was influenced by high community activity in conjunction with the holding of various regional events, even though some areas were still affected by the eruptions of Mount Lewotobi and Ile Lewotolok.

The number of flights to and from NTT in July 2025 increased by 16.83 percent compared to June 2025, and rose by 5.89 percent compared to July 2024. Komodo Airport, Labuan Bajo (West Manggarai) recorded the highest increase in flights, with 234 flights. Conversely, A.A. Bere Tallo–Haliwen Airport, Atambua (Belu) experienced the largest decline, with 16 flights.

In line with the increase in flights, the number of air passengers in July 2025 also rose significantly, by 22.45 percent compared to June 2025, and increased by 5.32 percent compared to July 2024. The highest increase in passenger numbers occurred at Komodo Airport, Labuan Bajo (West Manggarai), with an additional 29,539 passengers. The largest decrease in passenger numbers occurred at Wunopito Airport, Lewoleba (Lembata), with a decrease of 301 passengers.

For maritime transportation, the number of sea voyages in NTT in July 2025 increased by 14.46 percent compared to June 2025, and increased by 9.63 percent compared to July 2024. The increase in the number of voyages was followed by an increase in the number of sea passengers by 34.45 percent compared to June 2025. However, when compared to July 2024, the number of sea passengers decreased by 26.05 percent. The highest increase in the number of passengers was recorded at Tenau Port, Kupang, with 57,073 passengers. Meanwhile, Waingapu Port, East Sumba experienced the largest decrease in the number of passengers by 7,025 passengers.
