Understanding the Difference Between the World Bank and BPS Versions of Poverty Figures

May 8, 2025 | Other Activities

In April 2025, the World Bank through its Macro Poverty Outlook mentioned that by 2024 more than 60.3 percent of Indonesia’s population or the equivalent of 171.8 million people will live below the poverty line. On the other hand, official data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows that Indonesia’s poverty rate as of September 2024 is 8.57 percent or about 24.06 million people.
Why different? It is important to understand wisely that the two data do not contradict each other. The discrepancies arise due to the presence of differences in the poverty line standards used and for different purposes.
